Barely CivilizedA PLACE WORTH SURVIVING
Privacy

The short version: this site has no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies. The only cookie is the one that keeps you signed in, if you choose to sign in. We only hold what you choose to give us, we use it for the one thing you gave it for, and we delete it when you ask.
What we hold, and why
- News list. If you sign up for Barely Civilized news we keep your email address, the date, and which page you signed up from. We use it to send you news about the game and nothing else. You are only added after you click the link in our confirmation email.
- Accounts. If you sign in, we keep your email address, the date you first signed in, your thank-you credits, and a reference to any donations you made. There is no password: we email you a sign-in link each time. Signing in sets one cookie so the site remembers you for up to 60 days; it is not used for anything else.
- Support form. If you write to us through the support page, we receive what you typed: your name, email address and message. We use it to answer you.
- Practice fishing scores. If you save a score we keep the three letters you chose, the score, your best catch and the time. That is not tied to who you are.
- Donations. Donations are taken by Stripe on Stripe's own page. We never see or store your card number. Stripe tells us that a donation was made and for how much, and shows us the name and email you gave it. We keep a reference to the donation so the thank-you credits and supporter stars can be given.
- Stopping abuse. When you send a form or save a score, we keep a scrambled, one-way version of your internet address for one minute, to stop the same visitor flooding the site. It cannot be turned back into your address.
What stays in your own browser
The wiki and the practice fishing game save a few things in your browser's storage so they still work next time: your sound setting, scores saved on your device, and supporter credits. That information stays on your device. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Who else is involved
- Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any host, it processes your internet address to deliver pages and block attacks.
- Resend delivers our emails, so it processes the address an email is sent to.
- Stripe handles donations under its own privacy policy.
- Google serves the fonts these pages use, and the video on the game page is a YouTube player in its privacy-enhanced mode. Loading them means your browser contacts Google.
We do not sell your information or give it to anyone for advertising.
How it is shared, and how it is kept safe
- Shared only to do the job. The companies above receive information only as far as they need it to host the site, deliver an email or take a payment. It reaches them directly over an encrypted connection.
- Encrypted in transit. Every page and form on this site is served over HTTPS.
- Card details never reach us. They are typed into Stripe's page and stay with Stripe.
- As little as possible. We keep an email address or a payment reference, not a profile. There are no passwords to leak because the site does not use any.
- Limited access. What we hold sits in the studio's own hosting account, which only the studio can open.
Your choices
- Leave the news list. Every email has an unsubscribe link. Using it removes your address from the list and deletes it.
- Delete your account. The account page has a "Delete my account" button. It removes your email, credits and stars from our records straight away.
- Ask us to delete or show what we hold. Write to [email protected] and we will do it.
Children
Accounts and the news list are for people aged 13 and over, and donations are for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us their details, write to us and we will delete them.
